Hey there. Welcome back to Marketing Matchmaker. It is now about July. When this episode airs, it will be the 1st of July and we are already well past the halfway point of the year. And I'm gonna ask this question of you again. I know I did earlier in June, where are you in your business right now? How are things going? Are you growing? Is your business where you want it to be? And if it's not why?
I would love to hear back from you about where you think you are getting stuck in your business right now and what you might want to hear about to help you move your business forward. This month, the month of July, I decided to focus on marketing must haves in our business. There are certain things that we have to have in order to really grow a successful business. And while some of them may seem completely logical of, of course, that's what I need, others may not be something that's as upfront and clear to you.
And I also know that there are a lot of people out there missing critical pieces of their marketing that would really help them to grow their business in a way that's profitable. I had a friend once tell me that the biggest mistake that business owners and entrepreneurs make in their business is that they wait to market rather than investing in marketing up front, they market later. And she was completely right. Like we had a whole discussion about why that is because people seem to think that marketing is a nice to have and not a must have.
Now I'm not saying that everyone is ready to jump into paid traffic for their business. What I am saying is everyone should be marketing your business. Whether you're doing that organically, through paid traffic, through networking, through whatever way it is that you're doing, it is perfect for you right now.
And there are definite must haves in order to successfully market your business. So we're gonna start with the first must have for your marketing and that my friends is a clear goal. I know I've said this in the past and it is so true. If you don't know where you're going, how can you know, when you get there. Having a clear goal in your marketing is in incredibly important, because it allows you to create a map of how to get to that goal. Otherwise, you're just kind of driving around in aimless circles, right?
We use GPS in our cars to get from point A to point B. You can create that same pathway with your marketing, IF you have a goal, IF you know where you are going with your business. So when we talk about goals, we need to make sure they are very specific, that they are measurable, that they are attainable, that they're realistic and they're time bound.
Yes. I just described out smart goals. In marketing smart goals are just as important as any other portion of your life or business, because it really does make it clear about what it is that you want at the end. So specific, what is the aim for this marketing? Is it to add 500 people to your email list? Is it to bring in two new clients? Is it to grow your Instagram following or your LinkedIn following or to get on 500 podcasts? Whatever that goal is, has to be specific. You have to know where you're going in order to get there.
Measurable, and we're gonna dive into this more later, measurable is key. When it comes to marketing, everything in your marketing is measurable. Your analytics can be seen throughout everything. Even when you're doing things like networking, having a specific reason to go to a networking event and a goal to what, of what you're going to get there. And then measuring what actually happens after. Having a measurable goal is super important when it comes to profitably marketing your business and not just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what happens.
Having it be attainable. Now this, I think may be a sticking point for some people because at attainability is different for everyone. What I will say when we talk about attainable goals is that if you have never ever sold your business and you're just now getting started, and you wanna go from zero to a million in 90 days, that goal may not be attainable.
If you are looking to bring on the first three clients in 90 days, that is absolutely attainable. And there's big ranges within there that you get to look at and see, what is it that you can actually accomplish in this timeframe? Let me roll back to measurable. Well, actually it's in the time bound. So when you are doing this goal setting, make sure that what you're trying to reach is actually something that can be done within that specific time.
Realistic again, it's a lot like attainable and it's also a little bit more, what are you willing to do in order to get to that goal? Right? When we're talking about a realistic goal, we also have to look at ourselves and say, okay, realistically, what am I willing to do? Am I willing to do a live every day? Am I willing to go to a networking event every day? Am I willing to put myself out there on my own social media? What is it that you're willing to do makes for a realistic out output, right?
Because if we try and say, I think it's kind of like losing weight, right? If we say, I am never going to eat a cookie again, that's not realistic, right? If we are very introverted and we say, I'm gonna go to 10 networking events a week, and of those 10 networking events, I'm gonna talk to 10 people. So I'm gonna talk to a hundred people in a week, again, coming from an introvert. I know that's not realistic. So when we look at our marketing goals, our activities must be realistic to who we are and what we're comfortable with.
And the last of this goal setting is having it time bound because marketing should be timebound right? Whether it's a 30 day campaign, a 90 day campaign, a six month campaign or a 12 month campaign, it should have a time bound around it so that we know how long it is that we're, we're working towards that goal. Let's be honest if we said, we're going to, I don't know, Nashville, and it's gonna take us 20 hours when it's a six hour drive. That's not a realistic timebound right. We know how long it should take us to get there.
It's the same with your marketing, when you say, I want to get 500 people on my email list, knowing the time, the time it will take, like what is, what is the goal? You wanna get 500 people on your email list in 90 days. Okay, great. That's a time bound system where you can realistically assess at the end. What's really gonna work for you.
Having goals for your business and for your marketing will help you to really accelerate that growth, to really impact what it is that you're doing. And when you do it in the smart model method, when they are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound, you're better able to assess what's working in the long term.
Because I think that's one of the things that people really miss is that while they may do marketing activities, they don't step back and look at those activities and say, okay, this worked and this didn't, which is why people end up continually throwing spaghetti at the wall marketing because they don't know what's actually being effective and what's actually working for them.
So this month I encourage you, actually, I challenge you to sit down and create a smart goal marketing plan for the next 90 days.
We have all of summer, my friends let's really dive in to create into creative marketing, to create our marketing plan so that within 90 days we are moving in the right direction. Because we all know without marketing, we won't have leads without leads. We don't have sales without sales. We don't actually have a business. We have a hobby. Take the time to create these smart marketing goals so that you are better able to assess. What's going to work in order to grow your business, increase your income, and scale your impact.
