Hey there, welcome back to Marketing Matchmaker back by popular demand, we're doing another episode of Marketing Mythbusters. I have to say, I honestly had no idea how popular this subject would be when I first started it. It kind of just started as a whim. And I seemed to have gotten a lot of positive feedback on this idea. So quite frankly, there are a ton of myths out there when it comes to marketing. And I could honestly probably do an episode every week on just the myth busters and still have content left over. So we are going to cover today, some social media marketing myths and even more important what you should do instead.

We actually covered this myth back in episode 47. It is so super important though. It bears repeating marketing myth. All I need is social media in order to grow my business. The fact of the matter is that social media platforms are amazing outlets to develop an audience and really grow your business. And here's where the rub comes in. Social media outlets actually own all of the content that you put on it, which means when you post a video like to any social media platform, it actually becomes theirs. On top of that, and it's all in their terms of service by the way, if you aren't aware on top of that, the secondary piece of it is that because of the algorithm and how social media is really set up, your content is shared based on what they think your audience needs and wants to hear.

So depending on when you post who you post, how you post, what you post, all of those things are going to trigger how social media actually sends it out to the audience. Which means only using a social media platform to market your business actually puts you in a detriment when it comes to creating and growing an audience.

Reality is; if you are wanting to really grow and scale your business, you have to move your audience from social media onto your own email list.

Because fact number two, when it comes to social media, is every contact you make in social media land actually is theirs. You do not have a right to any list of your contacts on social media and their information. Whether that's email addresses or phone numbers. I think, I don't know, maybe five, 10 years ago, you could download like all of your contacts and all of their contact information that went out the window a couple of years ago. So even downloading your current contacts, literally just gives you a name of your contact and maybe the information that you've connected with them back and forth, but you're not actually going to be getting their email addresses and their phone numbers and all of that kinda stuff.

So all of that is to say, if you do not move your contacts from social media, your audience from social media, onto your email list that you control and you own, you run the risk of losing them should you do what one of my clients did, which was lose her password and they never let her back in because of it. So she actually had to end up creating a whole new profile and connecting with people all over again, which is possible and time consuming.

What if you forget someone that could have been your potential ideal client? That my friends is why the myth of all I need is social media to market my business is a myth. You need much more than social media in order to market your business.

So after that myth, this next one is actually kind of the opposite, actually pretty much exactly the opposite. So marketing myth; my customers aren't on social media.

Here's the thing. I'm not sure where people are coming up with these myths. However, everyone is so on social media from people from 12 years old to 90 years old, if they have access to the internet, if they have access to a phone, they are on some type of social media. The fact of a matter is over 3.6 billion people are using social media just in 2020. And that number is projected to be roughly 4.4 billion by 2025.

Maybe your clients aren't on every social media platform, but I will almost guarantee you that they are on at least one.

Now your job is to figure out which one and head over there and become present on that social media platform, marketing myth. You need to be on every social media platform.

So this one is less of a myth and more of just a mistake; Reality is, is just because I can name a lot of social media networks. It doesn't mean that I should have a profile on all of them. Let's play a really quick game name, all the social media platforms you can and go. So for me, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, WhatsApp, TikTok, Snapchat, Clubhouse, right there. Those are nine different platforms. And those are just the ones that I'm naming off the top of my head.

Honestly, it's almost impossible to be on every social media platform. So instead, what you should do is focus on just a couple, make sure they're the ones where your ideal clients are hanging out. It is very easy to find that out.

And here's a quick fact, age range really does determine where people hang out on social media. So you are going to find more gen X and boomers on Facebook. You're gonna find more millennials and gen Z on Instagram. Those are just two platforms. They're also all over the other places.

Reality; finding where they live, right, where they're hanging out, isn't that hard and making your presence known on those platforms is super important. So determine which platform it is that you want to use and actually go there.

That leads me right into my next myth marketing myth; I need to post every day, sometimes multiple times a day to social media. You see the problem with this belief is that it's not about the quantity of posts that you're posting or, or content that you're posting. It's the quality of post you're doing. If you put a hundred low grade, low quality, low value content out there, you would get less results than if you focused on 50 really high quality, high value pieces of content, your content is going to be much better received, consumed, and acted upon if you've put a lot of thought behind it and really put your all into it.

When it comes to social media marketing, it is less about the number of posts you post and more about the value that you're giving them. Focus on quality, value based content for your audience, things that will have how helpful and informative and really help them to connect with you or change the way they're thinking. The thing with social media is, is that it really moves super fast. So what you post today can actually be used at again and again.

If you don't have the time, the energy or the effort to create 30 new posts a month, create 10 solid ones and you can reuse them and repurpose them in different ways. Or create one really good one like a podcast or a video of some kind that you can dice up into smaller micro content pieces. That my friends, will help you to really generate a better ROI when it comes to your content on social media than if you get on there every day and post a meme or an inspirational quote. I'm not saying that those aren't valuable. I'm saying that it is more valuable to create really high quality content and post them once a week.

So my last marketing myth for today is a big one and it revolves all around Facebook. So my marketing myth; Facebook doesn't work anymore, or even better, Facebook is going to disappear soon.

I'm not kidding.

I've actually heard that myth at least three times this last week, this is actually kind of a twofold myth and it all revolves around Facebook. So we're gonna start with Facebook, doesn't work anymore. So my question to you, or to anyone that says that to me is what specifically are you trying to do on Facebook? That's not working. Are you creating organic posts, and that's it? Are you using paid traffic? What is it that you're doing? That's not working?

If we're talking about organic traffic on Facebook, you're right. That is a little more difficult to get to work. It's not impossible. It's just more difficult. Whereas we running Facebook ads works every time. It's a matter of whether or not you are targeting correctly, have the right message and have the right call to action for your ideal client to connect with. Facebook ads absolutely works, all day every day and can help grow your business to millions of dollars.

Here's the truth; Facebook remains the largest social media advertising platform.

So it's not a matter of if Facebook works. It's a matter of whether you are doing the right thing on Facebook to help your business and Facebook work together so that you are able to grow.

Now, let's address this crazy thing that I have heard multiple times in the last several weeks, this idea that somehow Facebook is closing down. I honestly think that this is wishful thinking on some people's part. And because it's wishful thinking, they're pushing that narrative out there. Reality is, is Facebook is a mega beast. When it comes to business, they absolutely are not going anywhere.

So some facts about Facebook in January of 2022, the stats are that 1 billion users are currently on Facebook. Tell me that you can't connect with and grow your business on Facebook with 1 billion users. And here's the other fact that I think people forget because while Facebook is deaf targeted to gen X and up age range, reality is Facebook itself may eventually age out of being useful. That being said, Facebook also owns four of the big social media platforms out there today.

They own Facebook. They own WhatsApp. They own Facebook Messenger and they own Instagram. And you know where the audience that is below gen X goes to hang out Instagram and WhatsApp. At the end of 2021, according to Facebook, they had over 3.5 billion users across those four platforms. And WhatsApp messenger was actually the most downloaded social networking app on, in, on the iPhone platform in 2021. What the tells us is Facebook is a mega business. It is not just the Facebook platform itself. It's now meta and meta owns a ton of other options.

While Facebook itself may go away, I don't think that's gonna happen for at least 20 years. You're looking at well, I'm gen X and I'm only 46. And most of gen X is hanging out on Facebook. So we've got a long time to hang out on Facebook. And if your target market is not gen X or above is not in that 45 ish and up range, turn to Instagram.

Guess what? My friends it's still Facebook, which means you still get to run Facebook ads and you still get to run with Facebook's algorithm, learning how to use navigate Facebook. And all of their social media platforms is really what's going to help you to grow your business, increase your income, and scale your impact.
