Strategies for Scaling from 100K to 500K – Episode 118

Jennifer:

Hey there, welcome back to Marketing Matchmaker, you know, one of my favorite things to do in my business is developing strategies for our clients. It’s really diving in really deep into their business and understanding who they are understanding their business, understanding what it is they do and who they serve. And my favorite business owner that I work with is that one that has hit six figures, like they’ve put in the blood, sweat and tears to hit six figures.

But what got them there isn’t going to get them to that next level.

So oftentimes, they struggle, like they hit a plateau, and they’re not sure what to do next, where do I invest? What do I do? How do I get leads? They may be looking to scale in a different way, right? Like if you’re a coach, and you’ve hit six figures by taking one on one clients, and you’re kind of at your bandwidth on that you’re looking to scale to doing group coaching, or doing a course or something along those lines, but you’re just not sure where to go and what to do next.

That’s a problem I see with a lot of business owners that they come to me, and it is super fun to really help them develop a different strategy. So often, business owners create that first six figures, by networking, by hustling, by doing that hard work. And I’m not gonna say that the next step is easier, because it’s certainly not I think every, every step of your business isn’t? Well, it doesn’t have to be hard. But it’s certainly not just lay back and let the money roll in easy, like that doesn’t exist.

So as a consultant, as a strategist, as a digital marketer, I love to help those businesses that are at that six figure mark, and they’re struggling to do the next thing because they really want to hit five 500,000, or they really want to hit that million dollar mark, and they’re not sure what to do to get there. Now, I will tell you right now that the steps you take to get from zero to 100 are one thing, the steps you take to get from 100 to 500 are different. And the steps you take from 500 to a million are different.

And yet there’s still a through line throughout it. And that through line ends up being you.

How do you get beyond that? 100k mark? How do you make more than eight or $10,000 a month in your business? What do you do?

So today’s episode is diving into that we’re going to talk about a few things that you get to focus on in order to take that next step to do the things the hard work to do to go from 100k to $500,000. Right, that’s a 4X in your business. So let’s dive in to what it really takes.

Step one, and I know nobody wants to hear this. And yet, it’s the key. It is like the foundation and the core of the problem. And that is your mindset. Your mindset controls 90% of your success. Your mindset is what’s going to help you push through to that next level, or what’s going to hold you back from hitting that next level. And being able to create those mindset shifts is really going to help you to really get to those next levels.

Now, I don’t talk about this much on the podcast, because in the past, we focused a whole lot on the action items of creating a digital marketing strategy. However, I am a trained mindset coach, right? I’m a master coach in mindset. And part of what I do for our clients is sometimes tweaking their mindset, right calling them out when I see them when we’re having a console call and I see them kind of spinning in this piece, helping them shift that mindset. And I do that because I know that no matter how much value I provide them, no matter how many leads I provide them. If they’re stuck in their mindset, it’s not going to matter. They’re going to end up self-sabotaging in some way shape or form and that’s going to make us both very unhappy.

Because quite frankly, when I take on a client, I enjoy keeping them very long term. And in order to do that, we have to have good results. And then in order to do that, I need my clients help. Because marketing while we offer done-for-you services is really a done with you process, there are things that I can help direct you on.

But there are, there are some things I can’t do for you. And there are decisions that you get to make. And when it comes to sales, that is not my area of expertise, bringing you leads and getting you to the sales call. That’s where I can help. But I also know that your mindset can keep you from selling effectively. So if I bring you 30 leads, and you can’t close any of them, a lot of it probably has to do with your mindset.

When you are stuck at that six figure mark, and you’re looking to do that next thing, your essential piece, the number one thing that you can do, to help you get there is work on your mindset. Hire somebody, because I will tell you right now, if you are part of the problem, you can’t be part of the solution. So if you know you’re having mindset issues, you can’t fix them yourself. Because you can’t see your own blind spots. That’s what a coach is for. That’s what a consultant is for. It’s to help you see those blind spots and help you to pivot your business and your mindset in order to move away from those blind spots.

Because once we bring them into the light, you’re able to access them and change them. And that’s what’s going to help you shift your business up to those 4k, to 4x. You’re up here, revenue. So and I would say that’s honestly for every level.

So if you’re a business owner, and you’ve hit $100,000, and you want to move to half a million dollars, find someone that can help you take you there. If you’re someone that is you know, hit a half a million dollars, and you want a million to hit a million, find somebody who can take you there, avoid trying to do it yourself. Because I’ll tell you right now, you’re gonna get stuck.

So the next piece in this strategy to get you to, to $500,000 a year is goal setting. Now, I love goal setting. I’m very goal oriented. And I think people often do goal setting wrong, I think I’ve done a past episode like an entire episode on goal setting. Because, because people do it wrong. When you are creating a goal, make sure it’s a SMART goal. And what I mean by that is that it’s Specific, it’s Measurable, it’s Achievable, it’s Relevant, and it’s Time bound.

Each of those steps make it smart, right? Specific, you need to know exactly what you’re going to be doing. Because I will tell you right now, your brain doesn’t work well in ambiguity, which means if you don’t have a specific outcome that you’re trying to reach, your brain doesn’t know how to help you get there. So by having something specific your brain can go, oh, yeah, I can do that. I know exactly what we’re trying to do. Have it be measurable. Having something vague, that isn’t measurable isn’t going to help you more money is vague, wanting to hit, let’s say $150,000 in six months, is specific. And it’s measurable, because you can look at exactly.

It can also be things like in your marketing, I want to have 10 new leads a day coming onto my email list, and I want to do two sales calls a week. Those are specific and measurable things you can you know exactly what you’re doing. And you know what the measurable amount is that it’s achievable.

This, I think is one of the pieces that people often set. And then it’s they don’t necessarily set achievable goals, if you’re going from zero to a million and if you’ve never made a million dollars in your life. Creating a goal to make a million dollars in 12 months may not be achievable for you. It’s not something you have ever done before.

Now, if you’ve made a million dollars making a million dollars in 12 months may very well be achievable. But it’s really being able to know internally whether or not that goal is achievable. Is it something that you can do we always want to stretch ourselves when it comes to goals but we don’t want to stretch ourselves so far, that it doesn’t that we’re never able to get to it. Now, I personally find like, if my goal was to make a million dollars, and I hit $995,000, I still find that as a win, right, like it’s close enough. And also on the other side of that if I’ve, if I’m at six figures, and my goal is a million dollars, and I hit $500,000, hey, I may not admit, admit, I may not have met the million dollar goal. But I still got a whole lot further than I was before.

Those are the kinds of things that I mean by achievable, that it’s relevant. Is this something that you want in your business more than anything else? Is it relevant to you? Is it relevant to your family? Is it relevant to the business? Or is it something somebody else told you to do? And you think you should do it.

When you’re making a goal, avoid the shoulds. Avoid saying I should like this “should” be my goal. Because that’s not something that’s relevant to you. And if it’s not relevant to you, you’re never going to put in the work to get there.

And lastly, make sure it’s time bound. Timeout is exactly that, put a date on it, put a date on it, so you know what the steps are to get there. So you know, if your date is December 31, and you work back from there, you can work out what are the steps I need to do in order to get to that goal. Again, it will make it easier for you to actually hit it.

So whether it’s increasing your revenue, or reaching a certain number of clients, or expanding your services, have a clear goal in mind, will really help you to successfully go from that $100,000 a year to that $500,000 a year.

Strategic planning, that my friends, all goes back to strategy, I think I’ve spent the last two episodes talking all about your marketing strategy. Having a plan of how you’re going to reach that goal is going to be essential. Being able to set that goal in three months, six months, a year, whatever your goal is, but working back from that goal, to set the plan, okay, I need to do this, I need to have this many clients by this point, whatever that thing is, is going to help you actually achieve that goal.

The best way to really scale your business is to create a strategic plan in order to do it.

For digital marketing, what I know is that it is incredibly difficult to create a half a million dollar business by just networking or just hustling. It’s not impossible, people do it. And it’s about how much time do you want to spend on that activity. So digital marketing is encompasses a lot of different areas. It’s social media marketing, its ads, its funnels, its email marketing, its blogs, it’s all of these pieces encompass the digital are encompassed within digital marketing.

And each of them are important.

Things like search engine optimization, can also help depending on what your business is. All of these pieces are going to help you get more leads. Because here’s the thing. If you’re stuck at $100,000, and it’s not because of your mindset, then it’s most likely because you don’t have enough leads coming in. If you don’t have enough leads coming in, digital marketing is going to be the most effective way to do that without overwhelming yourself on other items, and also on top of that without hoping and praying.

I love that working y’all like I am not even kidding. I network my pants off. And I’m also going to say that networking is oftentimes hope based, right? Referral networking, is meeting someone and hoping that you stay top of mind with them so that they send you a referral. There’s no consistency in that. Your consistency will come in through things like funnels and email marketing and SEO and paid traffic and all of those people even social media marketing where you’re hitting a larger network, you can create consistency in your marketing doing that, more so than you can relying on someone else to send you a referral.

And the last thing that’s going to help you scale your business is consistency, consistency, and adaptability. Be consistent about your marketing, be consistent about your brand, be consistent about your message. And mostly be consistent about what you freaking sell.

If you want to pivot your business, cool, do that. I am all for you doing that. But make sure that you’re then pivoting all of your messaging and all of your branding and everything so that you are attracting the right people. Also, sell one thing until you hit that half a million dollars, have one thing that you’re selling, even if you have multiple levels of that one thing, right in our agency, we have multiple levels to work with us. In our consultancy, we have multiple levels to work with us, but we’re still selling marketing, right, we’re still selling the ability to help businesses grow and scale.

Be consistent about what you’re selling, and especially about your message around what you’re selling. Also be adaptable. If you see major things coming down the pike, I love doing a SWOT analysis once a year, one of those part of it right because SWOT analysis is your Strengths, your Weaknesses, your Opportunities and your Threats. If you look at least once a year, your opportunities and your threats, what’s coming on in the world, what are the opportunities that you can give to your audience to maybe help them more that being adaptable there, and being able to slightly pivot right or left will help you to bring in more people into your world and scale them.

One of the things that we should think about when it comes to really growing a business from $100,000 to $500,000, is your Value Ladder. What does that look like? How is your customer coming in, when they buy one thing from you what happens then, because if you don’t have the next thing that they buy, that they can solve the next problem, they’re gonna find someone else who does. So your value ladder can really help you to grow to that next level.

Really focusing on these pieces, on your mindset, on your goals, on your strategic planning, on your marketing, and on your consistency, and your adaptability will help you to go from $100,000 to $500,000. So if you’re feeling stuck, take one thing from today and focus on that, I’d encourage you to start with your mindset.
