Successful companies take time to build. Most of the time, there’s no easy path. And, if you look at the history of a company deemed successful, you’ll find that there are years of hard work, failures, changes, and accomplishments that paved the way to success.
Building a business is hard work. There are challenges and frustrations but often it’s even the smallest achievements that drive us to keep going.
And, when you find yourself overwhelmed, you’ll find that there’s a network of people that can come alongside you to guide and support you.
Dave Baldwin is one of those people.
For my Marketing Matchmaker podcast, I had the privilege of talking to Dave Baldwin, a business strategist who loves helping people make their dreams a financial reality. He works with businesses to create proprietary systems and processes that make growth sustainable.
Dave believes that systems and processes are important at every stage of your business whether you’re just starting out, in that make-it-or-break-it 3-5 year phase, or have been going strong for longer. And, having the right systems and processes in place can increase the probability of longevity and growth in your business.
Dave focuses on two areas of business growth:
- Financial Audit: Dave dives deep into finances so that business owners are able to understand their cash flow and what the numbers actually mean to be able to make calculated decisions based on their business goals.
He notes that all businesses should have a bookkeeper that reports not only the cash flow of a business but depicts the value of your time. Dave says that too often people undervalue their service which ultimately hinders their business in the long run.
Why?
For one, too often business owners don’t know their hourly rate. So, when it’s time to scale it’s difficult to assess the finances needed in order to bring in new team members.
Secondly, consider whether you’re charging appropriately for the time that you spent on a project. By undervaluing your service, you will lose the right kind of clients. When you undercharge, you’re essentially sending the message that your service is not of high value, and people will ultimately listen to that and choose to pay someone who charges more.
2. Sales and Marketing: Dave helps business owners analyze what they are systematically doing to drive people to their business.
He encourages people to build trust with their ideal clients not only to understand what drove them to purchase from you rather than your competition but also to describe their problems in their terms. Then, using their language to craft your marketing message helps you connect with and generate more interest from your ideal client.
Additionally, Dave sees the benefit of building a culture that makes people gravitate toward your business and want to be a part of it even if the salary isn’t as high right away.
Finally, Dave stresses the importance of giving the processes time to work. Too often, he says, people don’t give something the time to work before it’s really had the time to take flight and move onto something else, which slows down business growth.
Here’s what I know: Marketing always works. And, I agree with Dave that it’s important to build systems within your business so you’re ready for every variable.
Your budget helps you create a marketing plan, and your strategy creates a system in which you build know, like, and trust with your ideal clients. I understand that everything from your budget to your message and strategy must be unique to your business to really connect with your ideal client.
And, that can be overwhelming. So I ask: Is marketing that area of your business where you need a system and process in place to really achieve your goals?
