Hey there, welcome back to Marketing Matchmaker. Today we’re going to chat about scaling (or failing) in your business. I’ve actually created a fantastic quiz made just to help you determine if you’re ready to scale or fail, head over to mmquiz.com to take the quiz. As I was developing this quiz I started thinking about how much there is to cover and decided that an episode dedicated to scaling was needed.

Let’s start with defining what scaling is. For me, When I talk to clients about scaling I’m generally refer to growing business beyond where they are today. That could be moving from 0-50K or 50-100 or 500-1m.

For my clients they could have different goals, like increasing sales to their warm audience or moving from organic success to ad or increasing ad spend to bring in more revenue.

Wherever you are in your business there is going to be a point where you want to begin scaling.

Anytime you start scaling there are potential pitfalls along the way. I want to highlight those today, as well as point out the key factors that you must have in place in order to scale.

Let’s start with the 5 elements you must have in place in order to scale.

A SOLID FOUNDATION

The number one thing every business owner should have is a solid foundation. This starts with proof of concept. Really this means that you have a core offer that you have successfully sold and that clients are getting amazing results from. Let’s be honest here, if we don’t have a solid product to sell, we can’t really scale the business.

Beyond the product, service or solution that you sell, you want to have a consistent and cohesive brand. Which means having a clear message throughout all of your marketing.

One of the first challenges I see with so many online business owners is to find a specific message that resonates with the right audience. It’s easy to spend time and energy trying to attract anyone and everyone and this is a big problem. And the reality is that when you’re trying to talk to everyone and anyone, no one is listening.  I often see people doing things in their marketing with no real reason behind it. They may have multiple funnels, multiple promotions or strategies that they’re marketing. And it ends up being more like throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. This is type of marketing is where people end of failing instead of scaling.

If this sounds familiar, I’d advise you to reevaluate your marketing strategy. Really look at the numbers and see what’s working. Focus on 1 funnel, 1 strategy, 1 message, this allows you to optimize what is working and notice the small parts of your marketing that isn’t. You’re then able to do more of what works thus allowing you to be able to scale.

Creating a marketing message that really speaks to your ideal customer is the first step in scaling your business.

FUNNELS

I’ve touched on funnels in several episodes. The reality is that without a funnel, it is incredibly difficult to scale, especially to those high 6 and 7 figures. Think about it, if you are wanting to reach thousands of people, how are you going to do that manually. All of your time would be focused just on that. You won’t have time to actually deliver the product/service. And we all know that sometime people need to know you for a bit before their ready to buy. The easiest way to accomplish this is by creating an automated system that establishes you as the expert, while providing your audience with valuable information.

FOLLOW-UPS

This leads right into follow-up. While funnels definitely contain follow up, they are not the end step. Funnels bring someone onto your list, once their there it’s you job to then create a system that will help you follow up with the prospect.

Make connection the goal what can you do to deliver valuable content for your audience? Knowing the results they want and designing content to get them there is the inner scoop in any success story. There are so many ways to do this. Writing excellent content is intensely powerful, finding ways to educate people that transforms their thinking and bringing groups together are effective ways to scale without requiring a huge audience. This is where you experimentation comes in. Play with the ways you show up best and with which your tribe is most responsive.

GENERATING LEADS

When we have our foundation, funnels & follow-up in place we’re better able to start generating quality leads that will be ready to take that next step.  Whether that’s through your FB lives, podcast or organic traffic. Putting yourself out there will allow you to start connecting with and generating leads, that when nurtured will turn into your ideal clients.

As you start to really scale you’re going to want to bring paid traffic into the mix. This allows you to really broaden your base. That being said, remember that you are generally starting with cold traffic here (you know those people that may not know they have a problem, they do not know that you exist And don’t know that you have the solution to whatever their problems.) which means that it’s even more important to have your messaging, funnels and follow up in place and be crystal clear on who you serve.

COMMITMENT

Lastly, Make a 100% commitment to scaling. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again. Marketing is both an art and a science. Which means that you are going to be testing an tweaking things as you go along. It’s really easy to just give up on the process. The reality is when you start bringing in cold traffic you often have to figure out how to replicate the journey of nurturing that makes sense for people who have no idea who I am. This sometimes means going back to your funnel & follow ups and really looking at where people are falling off. Where are they not connecting. This process can take time, and too often I see business owners give up.

This is where your commitment must come it. If you’ve never ventured out into cold traffic know that it’s going to take time, energy, and commitment to make it successful. Creating a scalable system can take months. And once you’ve done it, your ability to grow is limitless.
