Is Chasing Shiny Objects Stalling Your Business Growth? As a business owner, you’re always reaching to expand and grow your business. You have ideas, dreams, and goals that you want to achieve in your business.

Yet, for some reason, you always seem to be working hard but never actually accomplish your goals.

If this is your experience, there’s a high probability that you’re distracted by a shiny object.

In this sense, a shiny object is that new idea, new goal, new course, or new trend that serve as distractions. These shiny objects blur your focus and prohibit you from making real progress. I’m sure, like most of us, you can relate to this.

But, why are we drawn to shiny objects?

As business owners and entrepreneurs, we feel a need to keep up. We have to stay in the market to find the newest trends that our potential customers might be drawn to. We want to appear current and in-touch with our customer base. We want to provide the best, most up-to-date experience for our customers.

And, all of that is noble, honest, and good. That is, until it points us in a direction so far off course that we’re spending valuable time and energy on feats that will never actually serve our business–or our customers.

How do we avoid stalling business growth by chasing shiny objects?

  1. Focus on YOUR Goals: The biggest challenge of navigating the shiny objects is maintaining your focus. It’s true: Not all innovations are bad. However, it’s so easy to get distracted by all the new things that you also must determine their worth. Ask yourself: Is this directly related to my goal? Will it help me stay on track to achieve my goal? If the answer is yes then it might be beneficial to find out more information and if it will really help you in the long run.

  1. Stay True to Yourself: There’s always going to be something new. That’s just the nature of the world we live in. But, what’s most important is that you stay true to yourself. Focus on new things that not only align with your goals but also help you build your skills to achieve those goals. This ‘focus on yourself’ approach helps you build your business from the inside by investing in your most valuable asset–you.

  1. Mute the Distraction: One of the best ways to avoid being distracted by shiny objects is to stop seeking them out. And, by that, I mean: Stop investing time in finding all the things. All the trends, courses, ideas, etc. will not serve you. However, you may find that you need to find a new way to streamline something specific or you may need to take a course to increase your knowledge on a topic in order to achieve your goal. In that case, do your research and confide in a business network to find something that will serve your business specifically. But, always make sure you’re investing your valuable time and energy in something that will directly help you achieve your goal.
