I was recently asked the question: How do we market in today’s economy and in the midst of a pandemic?
The thing that struck me most is the idea that, even with everything going on in the world, your marketing changes.
Here’s the thing: No matter what is happening in the world–whatever crisis is going on–the fundamentals of your marketing strategy does not change.
It takes three to four months to build an audience; it only takes 30 days for people to forget that you exist.
If you stop marketing every time there’s a crisis, you will never grow your business. Because let’s face it, whether it’s COVID-19 or something else, there may always be something that could impact your business. And, you don’t want to be in a position where you’re always starting over at square one.
It would be a mistake to halt your marketing and set yourself back months of hard work. Instead, you want to keep your forward momentum going to continue to grow your business.
So, right now, the best thing for your business is to maintain your marketing strategy.
Businesses are about relationships. In order for people to continue to interact with your business, you need to show up. Be present. Be consistent. Be authentic. Time after time. And, continue to provide the value that your audience has come to expect.
Sure, it’s absolutely appropriate to adjust your marketing to reflect what is happening in the world. But, adding in those bits and pieces about current events will not change your marketing drastically. You’re still out there building relationships with your audience.
You’ve built your business because it’s something that you love. When it’s clear that your heart is at the center of your business, it shows in your marketing. People recognize your passion for helping others achieve their goals through your product or service. Don’t be afraid to be authentic and show who you are in your marketing at all times.
Doing so builds authenticity. It creates connections. It establishes trust. Which is exactly what people need in times of crisis.
Sometimes people forget that there’s a difference between marketing and sales. Right now, you make feel uncomfortable selling which is a different topic to address at a different time.
But, whatever you do, keep marketing. If you want to continue growing your business, you must keep marketing.
